“The Sand” aka “Killer Beach” (2015), It opens up in the style of a found footage movie, and quickly shifts back in forth from that to the film at hand. It was a nice backdrop and foreshadowing of what was yet to come. They awaken inside a car, a life guard tower, and … a Trash Can… yea I said it… A TRASH CAN! The movie’s plot gets well underway, as the stereotypical “bimbo” of the film (played by the beautiful Nikki Leigh), is the first to fall victim to the Killer Sands. Then of course so begins a small domino effect “We gotta help her, We gotta do something.” After death number two these guys get the picture… Don’t touch the sand!! Duh! So this movie goes on to rely dominantly on the talents of their cast. I can honestly say they all did a great job at pulling this odd creature feature plot off; But there were times Brooke Butler’s character (Kaylee: The lead Role) didn’t work for me. Maybe it’s because the writers had her possibly carry too much emotional weight, at least for the type if film it was. Like when it came to the very emotional type of scenes, her range started lacking. Even when it came to the “I’m gonna take charge, and get us the F$%k outta here” type of stuff, it just started to feel a little forced. Despite those moments, overall she did a good job for the type of film she was expected to help pull off. Lots of comical moments, coming from Cleo Berry’s character; I mean… the guy was stuck in a trash can for the entire movie… basically! Automatically, there is a certain amount of respect for someone, who can command a verbal role without any physical interaction with the other cast. Plus, although being a little cheesy, and the stereotypical African American at times, he made it work! I had several moments of laughter in between him, and of course Jamie Kennedy! Yea, they pulled Jamie Kennedy into this movie. I didn’t even realize it was him until the name popped up in the end credits. So as to be expected, he had his comic relief moments.
Meagan Holder was surely the wild card in the cast, but I think she gave the movie a certain seriousness, and stability that was needed to push the climax forward. The monster had my interests, but the directing felt a little off a few times. It was like, why are you guys arguing, while you’re literally in the middle of a survival moment? Why are you kissing, and talking like death isn’t literally lurking at your toes. Even the characters questioned it, “Do you really have to talk about this now you guys!?”
I will give this movie kudos on the death scenes for sure. The CGI for this B movie was easy on the eyes, and more believable than some movies with a bigger budget of similar nature. The setting is just one little spot on the beach, but it works. It increases the intensity of the thriller aspect; it felt as if I was waiting with them, trying to figure out… “What would I do?” This Horror flick may have lacked in scenery; but due to the half naked beauties, for some… it may not be lacking in scenery at all. Also those with foot fetishes… can go ahead and apply here at this movie, because the camera spends a lot of time on those little piggies; and trust me, that monster makes sure some of those little piggies get to market ;-)
So if you are looking for a good B Horror movie, this is one for you that’s fun in the sun. The acting is there, the direction is cool, and the deaths are unique. The resolve of this movie will make you exhale; but your eyes will surely buck wide open before the credits roll.
This is probably the best movie about a Car, SUV, Life Guard Tower, Table, Trash Can, and a Raft that you’ll ever see!
