"Howl" (2015) It’s about time something in the Werewolf genre catches my attention, and holds it until the credits roll. Yea this movie can be looked at as being a bit of cliché; I mean… most movies can. Yet, I won’t put this in the “It’s been done before category,” mainly because the style and pace of the suspense holds up, and fairs well among some of the best B movie creature features out there.
The Werewolves in this movie was nicely done. It wasn’t as if they were poor mockeries trying to prove a point, I felt that “These” type of werewolves, has yet to be portrayed in this fashion. They looked like half mutated human wolf wannabes, a quarter similar to ones we’ve seen in Van Helsing and Underworld. For this film, it worked, because I feel that there is more of a lure to the story unexplored in the film. I sincerely believe that this movie could have gone on for at least another 30 minutes; and maybe with at least 3 more characters to add to the claustrophobic/ confinement element. I wouldn’t have gotten impatient with this one at all. I love a good creature feature when it comes to dealing with pure survival horror. There was no high end action sequences needed; just the pure fear and paranoia of the cast, was well receiving enough for my personal tastes.
The way that the brief teaser of a back story was presented to the audience, it could indeed open up a prequel and even sequels of the same nature. The whole train setting was a wise choice for this one, it’s like everything worked out the way it was suppose to, and although I feel that several deaths were a bit premature, and the ending sort of left me wanting more… I think the director’s choices, was all for the best! Plus, you can’t go wrong when you got Shauna Macdonald from The Descent movies (2005 & 2009), playing a starring role!
